In her photo essay Sankt Anna, Heidi Specker traces the architecture of the distinctive church building. Her photographs render the masonry almost tactile through finely tuned color compositions. This attention to detail reflects the rubble-like aesthetic of the natural stonework of the reconstructed church. The fragmentary quality of the masonry stands as a symbol of fate—of wartime destruction and postwar reconstruction. Located in Düren, the church of St. Anna was built between 1951 and 1956 using stones from its medieval predecessor. The design is by Rudolf Schwarz (1897–1961) and Maria Schwarz (*1921), whose work on this striking church became a milestone in architectural history.
